Galaxy S3 Vs. HTC One X… Fight!

Today PhoneArena did a dogfight between the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X. Read on to see how both phones fared.

Both the HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy S3 are the top of the range handsets these manufacturers offer so it’s an equal battle. Both phones are the best Android has to offer, seeing as though Steve Jobs legacy lives on with the iPhone, it’s a jungle out there. By the end of the 14 or so minutes you will find out PhoneArena’s opinion.

At first we take a look at the designs of both phones, and believe me, there’s a lot to look at. Both companies take different approach to design.

As usual Samsung take the plastic route (a glossy plastic at that) though this doesn’t detract from the utter beauty of the design, I like it. A warning, the GS3 may not feel as premium as other devices, plastic being the scapegoat. The plastic housing is a design choice of function over form, choosing durability over aesthetics

The HTC One X in the other hand is a beauty. Keeping the usual HTC styling, the One X feels heavy and more premium than the GS3. The poly-carbonate is an utter joy to feel and hold, you can tell that HTC have spent time thinking things through. The phone feels expensive and there a heft to it.

You won’t have to worry about going through a two year contract with a cracked screen due to a drop from a rowdy night out at the bar i.e iPhone 4.

Although the Galaxy S3 doesn’t feel expensive it definitely feels more comfortable in the hand thanks to it’s curved edges and smooth lines. The HTC One X on the other hand feels heavy, expensive and holding it is not as comfortable.  (more…)

Samsung Galaxy S3 or Samsung Galaxy Note?

I know the Samsung Galaxy S3 hasn’t been released yet but I’ve been asked many times over the last few days on which phone to go for, the Note or S3.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 looks like an awesome phone and on paper the specs look up to date and on par with all the other top handsets. Compared to the Galaxy Note the Galaxy S3 is more powerful but it does not have the 5+ inch of screen real estate and the ability to used the S-Pen.

I like the Note but it’s a little on the giant side and it reminds me of the good old days when I owned the mighty Nokia Ngage and I used to ‘sidetalk’ on the streets of East London. The memories were not fond, believe me.

My brother owns the Galaxy Note and I have previously owned the Galaxy S2,  so I’ve messed around with both handsets. I now know what to expect from the Galaxy S3, and top of the range device which will have a 24 month warranty, a handset that will have latest apps and games, and phone that’s cheaper than the iPhone but can do much more.

You see, I’m not the type of person to follow trends. I mean, the iPhone is a damned good phone but there’s too much hype about it, people become tribal about it all. That’s not my thing.

My brother recently wrote a piece titled Samsung Galaxy S2 review – one year on, you should get yourself acquainted with to give yourself a background of the Galaxy S series.

If I had a choice, I would pick the Galaxy S3. It’s a really good phone and you know there will be tons of support in terms of software and as it’s Android you’ll get all the apps.

How to get Orange Swapable’s like Sky Sports on Galaxy Nexus

For more info on Orange Swapables click here!

If you’re like me and upgraded your contract with Orange and got yourself a Galaxy Nexus you’ll be wondering why your Orange Swapable’s are not working it.

I’m quite used to using the Sky Sports swapable to catch live games over WiFi (as 3G is laggy) and being able to stream music via Deezer Mobile on the Samsung Galaxy S2 to I went out on a quest to get it working.

I have a good understanding of how web browsers work and figured out that the browser on your phone verifies that you are using a compatible swapable phone and gives you a list of available swapables.

I then hunted for a Android browser that allowed spoofing the user agent (I tried many) and came across Dolphin Browser HD. The browser itself is nothing special (stock browser is better) but the feature that allows adding a user agent is class. All browsers should have this!

You may find that Dolphin Browser HD lags and crashes , this is due to it not being updated for Android 4.0.

Here’s a step by step way to get Orange Swapables on you Galaxy Nexus.

1. Download Dolphin Browser HD from here:

Market Link: https://market.android.com/details?id=mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser&hl=en

Dolphin Browser homescreen

2. Go to Menu > More > Settings > Dolphin Settings

Dolphin Browser settings menu

3. Click on User Agent and then custom

4. Enter the ref text in to the box: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.3; en-gb; GT-I9100 Build/GINGERBREAD) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1

Dolphin Browser customer user agent screen

5. Click ok. This fools the Orange servers making it think you’re using a Galaxy S2.

6. Now go to this address in Dolphin Browser, this will take you to the page where you can add swapables: http://orangeworld.co.uk/r/swapable/

Orange Swapable's screen

As you can see, I’ve added Sky Sports and I have a remaining slot to ass another. Click on this to select your swapable. Or click on your swapables to access it.

Dolphin Browser bookmark screen

7. Once you’re on you swapable add the bookmark to your home screen for easy access.

Here’s a screen of Sky Sports running on the Galaxy Nexus.

How good is the iPhone 4S camera?

Apple iPhone 4S

How good is the iPhone 4S camera is a question I always get asked. Is it better than the Samsung Galaxy S2, is it the best camera on a mobile phone? The questions are endless.

Check out this test between a iPhone 4S and a Canon 5D MKII. The exposure, shutter speed, frame rate were made to be as close as possible between the two cameras.

The test shows that the iPhone 4S’s small F2.4 lens and sensor on the iPhone are quite nice and take excellent video, the iPhone 4S has even got a little depth of field.

New phone addiction and how to deal with the financials

Sim Only Deals

With a new phone coming out every other month, gadgets become an expensive habit. For me, that’s where Sim Only contracts come to play. I regularly change phones so need a contract that is flexible.

Most recently I bought a Samsung Galaxy 2 but after a few months the Blackberry Bold 9900 came out and being a phone freak, I naturally wanted it. The sleek lines, the metal rim and Blackberries customary keyboard made it hard to resist.

To buy it offline was £400 so I went online and listed my Samsung Galaxy S2 on Ebay and Gumtree. I really loved this phone but I wanted to get something new, I didn’t want to give it up. I had to, though, because I didn’t have £400 spare laying around.

A few days later my before my listing ended on Ebay I received a call from someone who saw my advert on Gumtree. He tried and tried to haggle the price down to a measly £200. I would not budge! £350 or nothing I told him. My Galaxy S2 was in mint condition and with the added bonus of Samsung’s 2 year warranty period so I settled for £325. I went out eagerly to buy a Bold 9900 and added £75 for the brand new handset.

In retrospect, I regret buying the 9900… I miss my Galaxy S2! Haha!

As I wasn’t tied to a contract I could sell and buy phones without being tied down to 18 or even 24 month contracts. All I have is my SIM Only contract so I am free to use whatever phone I want!
